When a Kamikaze pilot struck the USS Missouri during WWII, his remains were found on the deck. Captain William Callaghan insisted on a military burial, a decision that was initially unpopular with the crew. Reminding them that a dead soldier is no longer the enemy, he had the crew stitch a makeshift Japanese flag to honor the pilot.
