Long ago, to join steel plates, workers would drill a hole in the metal, hammer in a red-hot rivet, and pound it into place. As the rivet cooled and contracted, it pulled the plates tightly together. But the more the plates vibrated, the looser the rivets became over time. People started wondering, could steel plates be joined without rivets at all
