In 1944, Kriegsmarine Captain Heinz-Wilhelm Eck ordered the shooting of shipwrecked survivors at sea after his U-boat sank SS Peleus. In 1945, he was charged with war crimes at the extension of the Nuremberg trials in Hamburg. He was found guilty and executed by firing squad.
