The "Leidenfrost Effect" occurs when a liquid comes into contact with a surface significantly hotter than its boiling point. It creates an insulating layer of vapor that prevents the liquid from fom boiling rapidly. This layer allows the droplet to "hover" and skitter across the surface on a cushion of its own steam, virtually frictionless.
